Tax Return Checklist

JSA Accounting & Taxation

This checklist tells you exactly what information and documents to gather before your appointment or before you send your paperwork to us. You don't need any tax knowledge to use it — just tick off what applies to you and have the listed documents ready. If a question doesn't apply, select "No" and we'll skip that part.

1Your Details

Just the basics so we know who this checklist belongs to.

Not sure? Leave the default — we'll confirm the right year with you.

🔒 For your security, please don't write your Tax File Number (TFN) on this form. You can provide it to us securely at your appointment or through our secure client portal.

Are you married, in a de facto relationship, or do you have a spouse for tax purposes?
This affects some offsets and Medicare levy calculations — it doesn't mean you lodge a joint return.

2Your Occupation

Tell us your main occupation and we'll highlight the expenses people in your line of work most commonly claim.

3Income

Tick everything that applies to you this year — each item tells you what document to have ready.

4Work-Related Expenses

Tick anything you spent money on for work this year. Not sure if something counts? Tick it anyway and bring your records — we'll check for you.

👆 Select your occupation in Section 2 above and we'll show the expenses related to your job here. In the meantime, here are a few things almost anyone can claim.

Suggested expenses for your occupation

5Tax Offsets, Rebates & Other Adjustments

These can reduce the tax you owe or affect your Medicare levy.

Rental Property Checklist

You told us you received rental income this year — here's what we need.

Rental income

Did you (or family/friends) use the property for private purposes at any time this year — e.g. a holiday, or living in it rent-free?
Did you buy any new assets for the property this year (e.g. new appliance, furniture, carpet)?

Rental expenses — records/receipts to bring

Tick anything you paid for this property this year and have the receipt, invoice or statement ready.

Capital Gains Checklist

You told us you sold an asset this year — this could be property, shares, managed funds, cryptocurrency, or something else valuable. Add each asset below — we'll show you exactly what's needed for it.

Business Income & Expenses Checklist

You told us you ran a business or worked as a sole trader this year.

Do you use accounting software to manage your business (e.g. Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks)?

"Email to JSA" downloads your answers as an Excel file and opens your email app addressed to [email protected] — just attach the downloaded file before hitting send (your browser won't attach it for you automatically).

Once completed, please print/save this checklist and bring it to your appointment along with the documents ticked above, or email it back to us.
